Carcass composition of Nelore steers feed with tropical grass or corn silages

Abstract

This research evaluated the nutritional plane and silage effect on the chemical and physical composition of the Nelore steers carcass. Twenty-four Nelore steers, averaging 369.05 ± 15.06kg of live weight and 24 months of age distributed in a randomized design, with a factorial scheme 2 x 2 (silage x nutritional plane) with six replications. The treatments had been: 1) Marandu grass silage and daily gain of 1.0kg; 2) Marandu grass silage and daily gain of 1.2kg; 3) Corn silage and daily gain of 1.0kg; 4) Corn silage and daily gain of 1.2kg. The silage and nutritional plane didn€™t affect all variables related to the chemical and physical carcass composition characteristics. However the animals whose received high nutritional diet plane showed highest daily weight gain in relation to the live and hot carcass weight, compared to animal feed in low nutritional plane. The muscular, adipose, and bony tissue proportions were 51.28; 33.11 and 15.60%, respectively. The muscular: bony; soft: bony; adipose: muscle and adipose: bony tissue ration were in average 3.27; 5.44; 0.65, and 2.14, respectively. The dry matter, ethereal extract, protein and ash values were 52.68; 47.32; 32.85; 14.91 and 4.92, respectively. The diet for daily gain of 1.2 kg resulted in a better animal performance and silage and nutritional planes didn€™t affect the chemical and physical carcass composition.
