Effect of animal type and of energy level of the ration on the performance of bullocks under feedlot conditions
Abstract
The performance of three types of bullocks about 18 months old (NE - commercial grade nelore; MA x NE - 1/2 marchigiana x 1/2 nelore; and CHI x NE - 1/2 chianina x 1/2 nelore) were compared under feedlot conditions using two rations. Ration A was estimated to have 60.1% TDN and ration 8 67.5% TDN. A complete randomized block design with six treatments (3 x 2) and six replications was used. The TDN contents of ration A and E determined in digestion trials were, reactively: 61.7 and 67.0% for mature sheep; 58.7 and 63.8% for NE;62.0 and 65.8% for MA x NE; and 56.0 and 61.7% for CHI x NE. To reach about 450kg Liveweight for slaughter, the NE were fed for 196 days and the other two types for 112 days. The main reason for this was the lighter weight of die NE at the beginning 01 the experiment. The average daily gains for NE, MA x NE and CHI x NE were: 0.829; 1.046 and 1.133kg/animal for ration A and 1.032; 1.423 and 1.267kg/animal for ration 8, respectively. The dry matter intakes and feed conversion, in the same order above were 3.07; 2.00 and 2.96kg DM1100 kg of LW for ration A and 3.00, 3.07 and 2.99kg of DM/100 kg of LW for ration 8; 12.6; 10.8 and 9.7kg of DM/kg of LWG for ration A and 10.3; 8.9 and 9.1kg of DM/kg LWG for ration 8. Ration 8 was superior lo ration A for liveweight gain and feed conversion (P> 0.01). The NE type was inferior to the MA x NE and CHI x NE types for liveweight gain and feed conversion. The interaction animal type x energy level was not significant (P > 0.05) for the parameters studied.Downloads
