Abstract

Performance and carcass traits of Saanen and Boer x Saanen kids slaughtered at two live weight classes (lighter and heavier) were evaluated. Kids were raised in fed lot, fed on elephant grass plus concentrate (2.5% of LW). Weight at birth was affected (P<0.05) by type of birth and sex and did not show genotype effect (P<0.05). The weaning weight showed effect of sex and was greater for males. The pre-weaning and post-weaning live weight gains were different (P<0.05) between sex, which reflected a smaller age to reach final weight. Carcass traits were affected by genotype and slaughter weight just for fat cover and compacity, which were larger for crossbred kids as well as for heavier ones. Cut proportion was similar between genotype, although tissue composition showed a genotype effect (P<0.05) with greater lean: bone ratio for Boer X Saanen kids. Meat traits were similar (P<0.05) between genotypes and slaughter-weight. Crossbred kids did not show better performance than Saanen kids, but have better carcass traits, mainly linked to fat cover and tissue ratio.
