Effect of two heights and three grazing frequencies in Brachiaria humidicola (Rendle Schweickerdt)

Abstract

The experiment was carried out at Estação Experimental Central of the Instituto de Zootecnia at Nova Odessa, State of São Paulo, Brazil. It was compared the effects of two height intervals (5-10 and 20-25cm) and three grazing frequencies 21. 42 and 63 days in the yield and forage quality of Brachiaria hurnidicola (Rendle) Schweickerdt, with the aim of obtaining informations about the adequate management of this grass. It was reached more dry matter production (P < 0.01) with the use of lower grazing (1 5.0t/ha/year) than with higher grazing (7.4t/ha/year), and decrease of production (P < 001) with increasing rest interval, except when this interval increased from 42 to 63 days in to higher grazing, when it remained practically the same. The percentage of crude protein (average: 6.32%) in the dry matter decreased in a linear form (P < 0.01) with the increase of the rest frequency. The level of crude fibre (average: 31.80%) and in vitro dry matter digestibility (average: 61 .89%) was not significantly affected either the heights or the frequencies of grazing. The estimated stocking rate average for Brachiaria humidícola was 3.4 and 1.1 A.U./ha for rainy and dry periods respectively.
