Abstract

The work was conducted with water buffaloes at Posto Experimental de Castilho, SP, from 1987 to 1992. It were used 50 cows and two bulls of Mediterranean breed in 100 ha of green panic pastures (Panicum maximum var. Jacq). After reproduction, were studied birth weight (BW), weaning weight (WW) weight at 12 (W12), 18 (W18) and 24 (W24) month of age and gain of weight from 12 to 18 (G12-18), 18 to 24 (G18-24) and from birth to slaughter (GYVL). The calculations were made to rate of conception per year (RC), rate of weaning per year (RW), calves weaned per cow in reproduction (CW/CR), calves weaned per animal unit of 450 kg (UA) in reproduction (CW/UAR), calves weaned per area per year (CW/ha/year), weight live sold in the system per year (WLS), productivity of system (kg/weight live/ha/year), index of weight live to slaughter and gross return per area, considering dressing of 50% and cost of €œarroba€ (32 pounds) of US$ 20,00. The average results were to BW, WW, W12, W18, W24 : 40.37 ; 225.31; 299.23; 370.03 and 490.58. The averages to G12-18, G18-24 and GWL were 0.42; 0.70 and 0.62 kg/day respectively. There were effect to year for ali traits except to W18 and GWL; of buli for all traits except for G12-18 and weight of cow at calving for WW, W12 and GWL. The results were RC of 96%, RW of 78.6%, CW/CR of 175.48 kg; CW/UAR of 121.3 kg; CW/ha/year of 183 kg; WLS of 22.736 kg, and productivity of 227.36 kg/weight live/ha/year and economical return of US$ 151.00/ha.
