Abstract

Seven colonies of Apis mellifera L.(Africanized honey bees) from Botucatu region (SP) were sampled each hour, in a total of 12 daily samples per colony, for five consecutive days. During the samplings, the following meteorological factors were registered: temperature under shadow€™ and sun ºC), air relative humidity (%), luminous intensity in the beehive opening and in the environment (lux), wind velocity at the height of the beehive entrance and at 7 meters (m/s), air pressure (mm Hg) and absolute humidity (g/m3). In order to collect the nectar brought by the worker bees, their abdomen was compressed causing regurgitation. The nectar sugar concentration was determined directly, by putting the regurgitated nectar in a refractometer. From the statistical analysis, it was concluded that: The nectar sugar concentration varied during the day, and the nectar was more diluted at low temperatures and high relative humidity. The sugar concentration was lower in the morning, from 7:00am to noon, than in the afternoon, from 1:00pm to 6:00pm. The meteorological factors that had more influence on the nectar sugar concentration were: positively, the temperature under shadow and sun and luminous intensity in the beehive opening, and negatively, the relative humidity and air pressure. The volume of nectar gathered showed little oscilation and 76,6% of the bees collected volumes bigger than 20ul during the day.
