Abstract

Africanized honeybees (Apis mellifera L.) were studied in the Botucatu region (São Paulo State) from August to December, 1996, in order to determine pollen trapping and its eflects 011 honey and propolis production..The pollen yield was 1.47± 0. 88kg/beehive. Honey yield from beehives with trap was 28.0% smaller than from those without (12.3±3.4kg of honey in pollen trapping treatment and 17.0±7.5kg in the one without trap). Propolis yields were similar in both treatments (236.3±40.4g/beehive in pollen trapping treatment and of 219.0±40.7g/beehive in that without trapping) . Gross income from treatment with pollen trap was 26.5% higher than from the control, giving beekeepers an alternative to diversify activities and increase profitability.
