Abstract

The present study was carried out at Instituto de Zootecnia, SP, in order to evaluate the nutritive value of the silages made from grccn and vvilted herbage of elephantgrass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.) cv. €œGuaçu€. Each plot rcceived 100 kg N, 80 kg P205, and 100 kg k,0 as (NH4)2S04, simple superphosphate, and KC1, respectively. Nitrogen and potassium were split-applied, one half mowing and the other half 28 days latcr. The plots used for silage making were staged 011 the saine dates and received the same fertilization. Silages were made from both fresh and wilted herbage, whole and choppcd plants, with whole plants being dehydrated for 24 hours under field conditions. Chopped herbage was vvilted in the sun for 4 hours on a brick-fioored area. Experimental silos were 150-L plastic drums. The feeding trial was set up in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Treatments consited of ali possible combations of three forage ages (maturities) and three types of forage (thus a 3 x 3 factorial). Voluntarv intake increased witli wilting of wholc plants belore ensiling although digestibility, TDN concentration, and TDN intake were not affected by wilting.
