Abstract

Eighteen Holstein calves were randomly assorted to three diets with: (A) soybean oil meal, (B) toasted whole soybean, and (C) raw whole soybean, and fed from the 16th to the 91eth day of age. Results did not show significant differences between treatments A and B, concerning respectively final body weight (79.40 and 84.50kg), liveweight gain (32.60 and 34.40kg), protein conversion (0.53 and 0.48kg) and hight of calves (89.80 and 87.50cm). Raw whole soybeans (C) showed lowest final body weight (69.20 kg), liveweight gain (23.00kg) and protein conversion (0.68kg). Size of calves (85.30cm) fed ration (C) was lower (P < 0.05) than soybean oil meal treated calves (A). Thus, toasted whole soybean may replace soybean oil meal in rations fed to young growing dairy calves as a source of protein.
