Abstract

This trial was carried out at Estação Experimental de Zootecnia de São José do Rio Preto, in 1991, to evaluate the sacharina, an animal feed obtained from the aerobic fermentation of ground sugarcane with urea and minerals, according to a Cuban technology. Eighteen 12 months old animals averaging 223kg of liveweight, 9 male and 9 female, of the Santa Gertrudis breed were utilized in a Randomized Block Design to evaluate the effects of the treatments: 1) corn silage + concentrate (83% ground corn ears + 17% soybean meal); 2) corn silage + sacharina (replacing 60% of the concentrate); 3) elephant grass silage + concentrale. The proportion of roughage in the diet was 55% and the animals remained in individual pens during 94 days, with 10 days of adaptation, and were fed only one daily meal. During the processing of the sugarcane for the production of sacharina, it was not obtained the expected fermentation, resulting in low levels or true protein. The mean daily liveweight gain for the treatments in the same order above were, 1.344; 1.018 and l.036kg, respectively. The dry matter intake as a percentage of liveweight was 2.69, 2.63 and 2.32, and in g/kg LW0.75, 110,107 and 94, respectively. The feed convertion was 5.72, 7.01 and 6.16kgDM/kg LWG. The inclusion of sacharina depressed the liveweight gain.
