Effect of Efrotomycin (MK-621) on weight gain and feed efficiency for growing and finishing swines

Abstract

A swine pen-trial experiment was carried out in the Instituto de Zootecnia, Nova Odessa,SP, Brazil, to assess the effect of efrotomycin (MK 621) on the productivity of swine during the starter, grower and finisher periods. Sixty-four Landrace x Large White piglets were used, sixteen in each of four replicates. The trial employed a randomized block design with blocking by Day-2 weight within sex and by pen location. Pigs were 51 to 58 day old on Day-0. Treatments wich were randomly allocated within replicate, consisted of rations containing no medication or efrotomycin at 2, 4 or 8 ppm. All medications were given continuously in €œad libitum€ rations. The pooled efrotomycin groups had significantly (P < 0.05) higher average daily gain to day 28 and significantly (P < 0.05) higher feed efficiency to day-84 than controls. However no significant differences were observed for average daily gain or feed efficiency to trial termination. Percentage increases over control for average daily gain to day 104 ranged from 4,0% at 2 ppm to 7.9% at 8 ppm. The corresponding range for feed efficiency to day 104 was from 3.4% at 8 ppm to 5.7% at 4 ppm.
