Abstract

This trial was conducted at the Instituto de Zootecnia in Nova Odessa, SP, to evaluate the dry matter yield and the nutritive value of silages sweet sorghum BR-501 and Coix lacrima Job. var. Tailandesa. Sorghum had greater (P < 0.05) yield (9.45 t/ ha) than coix (6.42 t/ha). The crude protein percentage of coix (6.97%) was higher (P < 0.05) than the one of sorghum (6.60%). Sorghum silage had better nutritive value than coix silage. Sorghum silage had 47.44% of digestible dry mater; 59.83% of total digestible nutrients; 45.44 g/kg of dry matter intake and 27.15g TDN/kg0€™75 as nutritive value, whereas coix silage showed 32.72% of digestible dry matter, 45.09% of total digestible nutrients, 21.73 g/kg 0,75 of dry matter intake and 9.86 g TDN/kg 0,75 as nutritive value. The coix silage had higher (P < 0.05) digestible crude protein than sorghum silage.
