Effect of sequential grazing on the botanical composition of available and forage selected by cattle on pastures Andropogon gayanus Kunth with mixed legumes

Abstract

This trial was carried out at CIAT-Quilichao-Colômbia. The purpose was to evaluate the botanical composition of the available forage and the forage selected by cattle in sequential grazing. Three groups of cattle were utilized in two types of pastures: Andropogon gayanus + Desmodium ovalifolium, and Andropogon gavanus + Centrosema macrocarpum. The botanical composition of the selected forage was evaluated through two techniques: a) forage colected through esophageal fístula and b) natural isotopic variation of carbon (12C/13C proportion) in the faeces. The results showed that: 1 - The sequential grazing of three groups of cattle influenced the selectivity of the available forage of the pastures )group A . 14.7 and 69.5; group B . 13.7 and 63.7; group C 12,9% CP and 58,2% IVDMD of the selected diet); 2 . The observed values of crude protein and IVDMD of the components of the available forage (grass, legumes and mixture) and of the diet selected of the pasture of A.gayanus mixed with C. macrocarpum were superior (P < 0,01) to those of the pasture of A.gayanus mixed with D. ovalifolium; 3 - The C.macrocarpum participated in the diet in higher pércentage than the D. ovalifolium evaluated through both techniques (esophageal fístula or proportion l2C/l3C in the faeces.
