Abstract

Guzera (G) dams were mated with sues of Guzera (G) and brown-Swiss (S) breeds and brown-Swiss-Guzera (SG) dams with Guzera (G). Nelore (N) and Chianina (C) sires, to compare the preweaning performance of the resulting progenies. The proweaning characteristics studied were: birth weight (PN), weaning weight (PD) and preweaning weight gain(GP). The bread of dams was the most important Source of variation for all characteristics, being the progenies of the SG dams superior than those of the G dams. The month and year of birth, the sex of calf and the lactation status of the cow in the previous year were important sources or variation. For each crossing group the mean values (kg) for PN, PD and GP were, respectively: GG (26.2; 162.3; 135.3); GSG (33.8; 204.8; 170.5): NSG (35.2;208.9; 1732); SG (28.7; 179.3; 150,5); and CSG (38.3; 221.6: 182.7). The average mortality was 7.3% being 14.0% for GG, 5.1% for GSG. 4.2% for NSG, 8.0% for SG and 9.6% for CSG. The individual heterosis and that related to the maternal hability of the dams (mainly non additive genetic factors) and the complementarily of racial attributes (mainly additive genetic factors) were the major influence that contributed to the greater performance presented by the crossbred calves Bos Taurus Taurus X Bos taurus indicus as compared to the straightbreds Bos taurus indicus.
