Abstract

The present field plot trial was developed during three years, at Estação Experimental de Colina of the Instituto de Zootecnia, State of São Paulo, Brazil. It was evaluated the potential supply of nitrogen by forage legumes: perennial soybean, centro and tropical kudzu to guinea grass. These species of tropical pasture were fertilized with three levels of nitrogen (0, 150 and 300 kilograms per hectare per year) and each one of the legumes was also mixed the guinea grass. Soybean, centro and tropical kudzu mixed with the guinea grass yield the equivalent to a fertilization in guinea grass alone of 96, 147 and 169 kg of nitrogen per year. The forage production of guinea grass increased up to 300 kg N per year, with increases in dry matter (DM) yield of 14.4 kg of DM/kg of N applied and protein production (pp) of 2.75 kg of pp/kg of N applied. The forage legumes didn€™t increase significantly the protein contents of mixed guinea grass when compared with guinea alone without N fertilizer.
