Abstract

The trajectory of sericulture in São Paulo State ince the late XIX century to the present time has been described and analyzed in this paper, focusing on the major political, economic, social and geographical aspects that determined its rise and fall as productive activity. The advances in research and technology were also presented, as well as the institutions responsible and the names of the principals involved and their contribution. Finally, it was evaluated the current situation of sericulture in the State and future prospects, due to the new opportunities that have not been explored, involving the silkworm and mulberry.
