Abstract

Two sources of roughage, poor jaragua hay (Hyparrlzenia rufa) vs sugar cane bagasse, and two sources of protein, cottonseed meal vs soybean meal, were compared in a feeidlot trial during 133 days. Fourty, 15-18 months-old crossbred steers (5/8 Bos tourus and 3/8 Bos indicus) were divided in 4 similar groups of 10 each assigned to one of the four treatments at random. Dry matter intake and liveweight gain were higher for the treatments with jaragua hay than for treatments with sugar cane bagasse. Protein source and the interaction protein source-roughage source were not significant.
