Abstract

The present experiment was carried out at the Estação Experimental Central of the Instituto de Zootecnia, Nova Odessa (SP), Brasil, with the aim of evaluating the effect of the storage time of buds of elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.) on their viability. The following treatments were studied: without storage (control) and storage for one, three, seven and fifteen days. There was an almost linear decrease on the percentage of bud development as the storage time increased up to five days. Then, up to fifteen days of storage the budding percentage became more or less constant. Even without any use of preservatives the buds presented 42% of viability after six days of storage, time that would be sufficient to allow their transportation to long distances.
