Abstract

The experiment was carried out at Iguape, SP, and consisted of an evaluation of grasses and forage legumes for dry matter and protein yields in that country. The contents of K, P and Ca were also determined. It was tested 15 grasses and 10 forage legumes under natural soil fertility conditions and under fertilization. The results showed that Stylosanthes guyanensis cv. IR 1022, Centrosema pubescens and Pueraria phaseoloides gave the highest dry matter and protein yields kg/ha/year. Although there was no significant differences for dry matter and protein yields, the grasses Setaria anceps cv. Rabo-de-Cachorro€, Paspalum enoarum, Digitaria decumbens cv. Trensyala, Brachiaria mutica and Paspalum plicatulum gave the highest yields. Differences due to fertilization were found only in the dry matter yields of the grasses. The grasses studied had different Ca, K and P contents. The forage legumes differed only in the Ca contents.
