Abstract

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of Cr-yeast and homeopathic product on the weight gain and feed intake of growing beef cattle. Twenty four weaned Nelore calves with 230 kg live weight were used for a 148 days study. It was utilized a completely randomized design to conduct a 2x2 factorial experiment with four treatments and six replications (with and without Cr-yeast x with and without homeopathic product). No significant differences for daily total dry matter ingestion (4813 x 4806g/animal DTDMI), daily weight gain (136 x 142g/ animal DWG) and DWG adjusted by the co-variable DTDMI (135 x 143g/animal) were found between treatments with and without Cr-yeast, respectively. However, the homeopathic product caused a significant decrease (P=0.0030) on DTDMI (4536g/animal) compared to the treatment without the homeopathic product (5108g/animal). The DWG of the treatment which received the homeopathic product (87g/animal) was significantly lower (P=0.0028) than the DWG of the treatment without the product (196g/animal). When DWG results were adjusted by the co-variable DTDMI, no significant difference between treatments with and without the homeopathic product (139 x 139g/animal, respectively) was observed. According to these results, the Cr-yeast supplement and the homeopathic product are not recommended for beef cattle fed with a low quality diet during the growing phase. The homeopathic product had a negative effect, reducing DTDMI and DWG.
