Abstract

The separation of sperm that bear the X or the Y chromosomic sexual complement represents an extremely interesting alternative in animal production industry, due to the possibility of economic gains and management enhancement by choosing the sex of the offspring. However, in spite of considerable advances in cell separation technologies, results must be improved in order to render possible its commercial use. This review describes the current knowledge about the principal techniques employed for Y- and X-sperm separation, based on the physical and/or chemical differences between these two cellular populations. Among the reviewed separation techniques (immunological, electrophoretical, swim-down in viscous media, centrifusion in density gradients, etc.), flow-cytometry appears the most promising, due to its high accuracy and the acceptable viability of sperm separated by these means. For the artificial insemination industry, the control of a simple and reliable sperm separation technology aiming the sex selection of domestic animal offspring, would suppose an impact comparable to that obtained when semen cryopreservation control techniques were attained.
