Abstract

The present work gathers information regarding the plant origin of propolis produced in countries from temperate and tropical zones of the world. It is the purpose of the paper to demonstrate the utility of such information for the rational use of propolis. The following topics are dealt with in the paper: a) resin secretion by floral structures; b) potentialities and shortcomings of analysis of metabolites and secretory structures in studies about plant origin of propolis; c) synthesis and allocation of secondary metabolites in plants; d) the relevance of the relationships Apis mellifera x Baccharis spp. (Asteraceae) for propolis production in Brazil.
