Abstract

The release of radioactive particles into the environment may contaminate insects and their products and, consequently, the mankind. Beekeeping depends on the plants, and bees are exposed to pollutants that poison them and contaminate their products. Among bee products, the honey has raised public interest, being used as energy food and €œnatural medicine€. The goal of study was to investigate the presence of gamma radiation, with emphasis on cesium-137, in the Brazilian honey (Goiânia/GO) and Italian honey (Friuli-Venezia Giulia region - FVG). Brazilian sample did not show cesium-137 contamination, but showed potassium-40. On the other hand, Italian samples showed cesium -137, as well as potassium-40. Cesium-137 levels found in the Italian honeys showed great variation, dependent of the botanical origin of nectar. However, cesium-137 levels found in the honey samples was very low, and would therefore be negligible from a view point of a toxicological risk to consumers. One may conclude that honeybee may be an important indicator of radioactive contamination, being an useful tool for monitoring the environment.
