Influence of meteorological factors on mating sucess of africanized honey bee queens
Keywords:

The impact of meteorological conditions on the mating success of Africanized honey bee queens under tropical climate was checked through correlation of percentage of successfully mated queens with season meteorological conditions prevailing during breeding. The used meteorological data were atmospheric pressure, temperature (minimum, average and maximum), relative humidity, wind velocity, cloudiness, evaporation, rainfall and insolation. This evaluation study comprised sixteen (16) queen production cycles performed from August, 1990 through August 1992 at the Centro de Apicultura Tropical, in Pindamonhangaba, SP (22º57'S, 42º27'W; 560 elevation) Mating success decreased when wind velocity increased; this was the only significant meteorological effect found (r = - 0,43; p < 0.05). Thus, one can suppose that the major meteorological factor for this phase of queen production is wind velocity - which leads us to recommend to avoid windy places to install queen rearing bee yards.Downloads
