Marandu grass yield and nutrition in relation to growth stages and nitrogen fertilization

Abstract

An experiment was carried out with Marandu grass (Brachiaria brizantha Stapf) grown in greenhouse conditions from February to June 1998, using a complete randomized block design, with four replications. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of nitrogen rates on forage yield, young leaf blades total-nitrogen concentration and chlorophyll concentration, and to determine the critical level of nitrogen in this grass at 14, 28 e 42 days after the nutrient application in two growth periods. Plants were grown in pots containing six kilograms soil collected from the 0-20 cm layer of a distrophic Red-Yellow Latosol. Nitrogen was applied at planting and after each cut of the plants, at the following rates: 0; 75; 150 e 300 mg kg-1 , using ammonium nitrate. Nitrogen application affected dry matter of plant tops and roots, total-N concentration in young leaf blades and chlorophyll concentration (SPAD) in different ways between the growth periods. The critical levels determined on young leaf blades were: 8.5 g kg-1 at 14 days in the final growth and was associated to SPAD value of 22; 23.2 g kg-1 at 28 days in the final growth, associated to SPAD value of 39; 8.5 and 13.2 g kg-1 at 42 days of the initial and final growth, associated to SPAD values of 22 and 34, respectively.
