Abstract

The present study was carried out to investigate the effects of eliminating short lactations and adjusting milk productions for lactation length, on heritability estimates and ranking of sires, evaluated for milk yield traits of Pitangueiras cows (5/8 Red Poll: 3/8 Zebu), raised in São Paulo State. The following traits were studied: total milk yield (TMY), 305-day milk yield (MY305), lactation length (LL) and 305-day lactation length (LL305). Data were analysed by least squares methodology, according to four schemes of analysis of variance, including or not the regression of lactation length as a source of variation. And considering or not the lactations shorter than 91 days. Heritabilities estimated for TMY and MY305, were in average. 0.43 ± 0.10 and 0.33 ± 0.09. without adjusting for lactation length and 0.16 ± 0.06 and 0.09 ± 0.05. with the adjustment for lactation length respectively. Spearman€™s correlation coefficients between ranks of sires for all traits suggest that ranking can be modified both by the adjustment for lactation length and by the elimination of short lactations.
