Abstract

Eight Mantiqueira bulls with average age 3.5 years old from Experimental Station of Pindamonhangaba, São Paulo were selected for study of semen characteristics. They were maintained in good health throught the experimental period. Each bull received per day four kilograms of ration consisting of ground suapped corn (40%), wheat meal (40%), soybean meal (10%), cottonseed meal (10%) and mineral salt (1%). Semen collects were made with artificial vagina and the ejaculates were obtained once a week during a period of five months. Thus, the physical characteristics (volume, pH, sperm concentration, initial motility, percentage of live sperms) and chemical characteristics (levels of fructose. citric and proteíns) were analysed. The average obtained were: 1) Sperm concentration of 0.97 ± 0.07 spermatozoa x 10°/mm3; 2) initial motility of 3.46 ± 0.31%; 3) percentage of live sperms of 69 ± 3.89%; 4) mass activity of 2.83 ± 0.192; 5) volume of 6.51± 0.62 ml;6) pH of 6.46 ± 0.05; 7) protein concentration of 4.84 ± 0.058 g%; 8) fructose concentration of 650 ± 73.29 mg% and 9) citric acid concentration of 577.50 ± 16.44 mg%.
