Abstract

This trial was developed at the Estação Experimental Central do Instituto de Zootecnia, in Nova Odessa, State of São Paulo, Brazil, from May to November 1986, to study the effects of the addition of limestone, gypsum and urea on com silages. It was determined the digestibility coefficients, total digestibility nutrients, voluntary dry matter intake, nutritive value and nitrogen balance with sheeps through total feces collection. The following treatments were tested: com silage without additive, com silage with 0.5% limestone, com silage with 0.5% urea, com silage with 0.5% urea and 0.5% limestone, com silage with 0.5% gypsum and com silage with 0.5% urea and 0.5% gypsum. The com silage with urea and gypsum showed higher TDN percentage than others but there was no difference (P > 0.05) in voluntary dry matter intake and the nutritive value was similar to that of the silage with 0.5% limestone and that with 0.5% urea but superior to the others. The silages with urea were similar in nitrogen retained and with positive nitrogen balance while the silages without urea had negative N balance and that with gypsum had the higher negative value.
