Abstract

This work was carried out to evaluate chopped sugar cane as an almost exclusive roughage (there was a small walking area besides the barn), with two kinds of supplements, using crossbred lactating cows, during 105 days (21 days adaptation and 84 days experimental period). . In a completely randomized design, twelve cows were distributed in two treatments: treatment A = sugar cane + cottonseed meal + additional ration based on milk production; treatment B sugar cane + urea (amonium sulfate) + rice polishings + cottonseed meal + the additional ration. It was recorded the milk, the milk fat, roughage and concentrates intakes and live weight gains. The average milk yield for treatment A was 8.22 ± 1.76 kg/cow/day and for treatment B was 7.93 ± 1.97 kg/cow/day; for fat corrected milk the yield were 7.99 ± 1.78 kg and 8.13 ± 184 kg, respectively. These means showed no significant statistical differences. Significant differences (P < 0.01) were observed in changes of live weights: animals on treatment A gained 28.67 kg (average) and on treatment B there was an average loss of 5.80 kg.
