Abstract

Measurements of withers height, herigth, width of hips and girth were taken, and several indices calculated from Holstein and Mantiqueira cows with more than 5.5 years old, in the Estação Experimental de Pindamonhangaba. This was done to better characterize the Mantiqueira type. This is an old ecotype formed from Holstein and Creole blood in the areas of Mantiqueira Mountains in the states of São Paulo and Minas Gerais. The main conclusions were: 1- Holstein cows are tailer than Mantiqueira€™ s, while in all the others measurements they were, not different; 2- Mantiqueira cows have the same milk type characteristics as Holstein s; 3- Mantiqueira cows had higher values for the compaction and €œanamorfosis€ indices given them a stronger appearance and; 4- Mantiqueira in the majority of the data raised showed a highly uniform morphological characteristics, looking less variable than the local Holstein herd.
