Abstract

The selection differentials and selection intensity applied on post-weaning weights of Nelore and Guzera zebu breeds were evaluated. Beginning 1980 two selection herds were stablished, one Nelore (NeS) and the other Guzerá (GuS), each one composed of 120 cows and 6 sires, and a Nelore control herd (NeC) with 60 cows and 4 sires from the herds of the Estação Experimental de Zootecnia de Sertãozinho, Sãoo Paulo, Brazil. After weaning, the males were allotted to a feeding test and selected on final weight, around 13 months (P378). The females remained on pasture until selection at 18 month weight (P550). Within NeS and GuS, each year, three bulls and 20 heifers were selected based on highest P378 and P550 respectively. Annual selection in NeC was 2 males and 10 female with near zero selection differentiais on those characters. Annual culling for NeS and GuS was in the sarne amount of replacement and within NeC was 2 males and 10 females. Concerning the progeny born from 1981 to 1986, the midparent effective selection differentiais were in average 29.65; 20.74 and 4.08 kg respectively for NeS, GuS and NeC. The correspondent selection intensity were 1.14; 0.82 and 0.17 s.d.u (standard deviation units). The generation interval was 4.9 years in average for the three herds.
