Abstract

The population considered in this study was 245 nelore bulls reared and tested in the new performance test at the Estação Experimental de Zootecnia de Sertãozinho, State of São Paulo, Brazil. The analyses included the effects of year of test (1979€”1981), month of birth (August€”October) and sire (20). The growth characteristics were initial weight (PV), initial weight corrected for age (P210), gain on pasture in 14 days (GE14), gain in the adaptation period (GA56), gain in 112 days of test (G112), total gain in feedlot (G168). corrected final weight for age (P392), actual final weight (PPF) Year was a significant source of variation for all the characteristics but P210. The month of birth of the bulls were only significant for PV. GA56, G168 and PPF. Sire effect was a very important factor of variation on 0112, G168, P392 and PPF (P <0.01). Heritabiiity estirnates, obtained by paternal halfsib correlations were: PV = 0.10 ± 0.14; P210 = 0.11 ± 0.14; 0E14 = 001 ± 0.12; GA56 0.14 ± 0.15; 0112 = 0.54 ± 0.24; 0168 €” 0.31 ± 0.19; P302 - 0.44 ±0.22 and PPF 0.42 ± 0.22. The results showed that there was considerable variation due to additive gene effects in that nelore population. That variation could be exploited especially after the adaptation period by selecting the best individuals for those characteristics.
