Mulberry improvement by means of artificial hybridization

Abstract

This work was carried out in the Seção de Sericicultura de Campinas and in the Posto Experimental de Zootecnia de Limeira, State of São Paulo, Brazil. With the aid of mulberry colection, that was constitued by 21 female and 8 mate varieties, it was possible to develop a large plane of artificial hybridizations, with the objectives to obtaining news and highly productives mulberry varieties. The hybridizations was carried out from the year 1965 to the 1971, and 619 plants were obtained from 57 differents crossing. After the necessary studies was selected 24 artificial hybrids considered more promissing and that will be testes in productivity competition assays. The hybrids that presents the best qualities, will be multiplied and furnished to the sericicultor to replace the old varieties of low productivity and leaves poor in nutritive elements.
