Abstract

The effects of cattle genetic selection measured on weight at 378 days of age and breed of cattle were studied on animal performance of 144 bulls, having 36 animals from Nellore (NeS), Guzera (GuS), Caracu (CaS) selected herds and Nellore control (NeC), sampled from the 1992 to 1994 progenies of the Estação Experimental de Zootecnia de Sertãozinho ( Sertãozinho, SP, Brazil). Animals were evaluated in three sequential slaughter groups (88 ±10, 173 ±11, and 266 ±11 days on feed). The finishing diet had, on dry matter basis, 45% of corn and milo silage and 55% of concentrate, composed of grounded corn, cotton seed meal, urea and minerals. Average daily gain, dry matter intake, and feed conversion were evaluated. When compared to NeC group, the NeS group showed greater (P<0.05) adjusted mean for daily dry matter intake (kg/d), dry matter intake per metabolic weight (g/kg0.75), empty body weight daily gain, and carcass and muscle daily deposition rates. The NeS and NeC groups had similar values for dry matter intake per live weight and feed conversion (P>0.05). The selected groups (NeS, GuS and CaS) presented similar dry matter intake, feed conversion, and average daily gain (P>0.05). The NeS and CaS had comparable empty body weight, carcass and muscle deposition rates, but the dry matter intake (kg/d) differed between GuS and CaS groups. The GuS group had lower empty body gain than the CaS group (P<0.05), lower carcass weight gain than the NeS group (P<0.05), and lower muscle weight gain than NeS and CaS groups (P<0.05).
