Abstract

When Kikuyugrass (Pennisetum clandestinum Hochst), Ex Chiov.) was introduced in Brazil, during some years it was exalted as a good quality forage grass, however soon after it was forgotten. Trying to discover the reasons, we did an extensive review that shows Kikuyugrass forage qualities overcoming its deficiencies. Those refer mainly to a unavailability of seeds, to its threat as a weed in cultivation lands and to a high fertility requirement. All these problems were solved with new seed productive varieties, with the use of herbicides and the economic use of fertilizers. It was not possible to discover a feasible reason to explain the lack of interest for Kikuyugrass .
