Abstract

The present study was carried out in the Instituto de Zootecnia, SP, at “Estação Experimental de Zootecnia de Andradina” to compare the performance of zebu cattle and water buffaloes in feedlot. Six Nellore (Bos indicus), twelve Jaffarabadi (Bubalus bubalis), and twelve Mediterranean (Bubalus bubalis), intact males, were finished in individual pens during 84 days. Animals were fed with corn silage (60%), corn (31.3%) and cottonseed meal (8.7%). Initial weights were used as covariable in the analysis to compare breed performance. For nellore, jaffarabadi and mediterranean, average daily gain (ADG) were 1.474 +/- 0.099, 1.110 +/- 0.051 and 1.033 +/- 0.050; dry matter intake (DMI) were 8.69 +/-0.419, 8.38 +/- 0.214 and 8.40 +/- 0.215; dry matter intake per 100 kg body weight (DMI%) were 2.26 +/- 0.099, 2.19 +/- 0.051 and 2.20 +/- 0.051; feed conversion given by (DMI/ADG) were 4.66 +/- 0.27; 6.26 +/- 0.14 and 6.87 +/- 0.14 and gain efficiency (ADG/DMI) were 0.172 +/- 0.008, 0.132 +/- 0.004 and 0.123 +/- 0.004 respectively. Contrasts between the performance of nellore and water buffaloes were significant (P<0.01) for ADG, feed convertion and gain efficiency. There was no difference among the water buffaloes. Results showed that, at the same age, Nellore males are lighter than water buffaloes, but present better weight gain, conversion and gain efficiency.
