Abstract

This work carried out during October of 2002 to April of 2003 at Coronel Pacheco, MG, to evaluate the effects of two post grazing stubble heights (50 and 100 cm) and the basal and aerial tiller class on morphogenetics variables and dry mass herbage accumulation of elephantgrass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.) cv. Napier in pastures managed under rotational stoking with 30 days of grazing intervals. A complete randomized block design in a split-plot arrangement and four replications per treatment was used. Stubble heights was allocated to the plots and tiller classes to the sub-plots. The following variables were considered: interval of leaves emergence (filocron), number of leaves per tiller, length of leaves, elongation of green leaves and stems, growth rate, senescence and net dry mass accumulation rates of leaves and stems. The studied variables were not influencied by stubble heights. The basal tillers showed smaller filocron and senescence rates, larger number of leaves per tiller, larger site usage and larger growth rates and dry mass net accumulation of leaves and stems in spring. Aerial tillers increased his contribution for dry mass production of pasture from yearly summer.
