Abstract

Thirty five swines were used, with initial weight of 69.6kg. The treatments consisted of a basal ration (0 ppm of ractopamine) and two levels of ractopamine inclusion (10 and 20 ppm) of two different laboratories. The diets were based on corn/soybean meal. The experimental period was of four weeks, being evaluated the performance and carcass characteristics. The average daily gain was influenced (P<0.05) for the different treatments with ractopamina, resulting in the largest weight gain for the treatments with 20 ppm in relation to the group controls. There was not significant difference in the ration consumption among the animals of the treatments (P>0.05). Feed/gain ratio improved and larger carcass weight (P<0.05) was observed in all the animals of the treatments with ractopamine in relation to the group controls. The fat thickness of the loin decreased (P<0.05) with the use of the different ractopamines, as well as there was an increase (P<0.05) in the area of loin eye. Use of the ractopamine in the concentrations of 10 and 20 ppm, independent of the commercial mark, improved the performance of the finishing swine and the carcass characteristics.
