Effect of sulphur rates and sources on the content and ratio of micronutrients in alfalfa and white clover

Abstract

The effect of S on the content and ratio of micronutrients in alfalfa and white clover were studied in the greenhouse. Plastic pots of 5 and 1.5 liters, respectively, containing dystrophic Dark-Red Latosol (Oxisol) soil were used. The experimental design was a randomized factorial scheme with five replicates. Four rates of CaS04.2H20 (0, 25, 50 and 100 mg kg-1) and one rate of K2SO4 (50 mg kg-1) were used as sources of S. Alfalfa was evaluated at six cuttings and white clover at three cuttings. The variables analyzed were contents and ratios of B, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn in the aerial dry matter. The applications of S significantly raised the ratio of Mn in alfalfa. However, rates and sources of S did not affect the ratios of B, Cu, Fe and Zn for both legumes. The type and rate of S had an effect on the content of micronutrients. The highest contents of Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn in alfalfa were observed applying 100 mg kg-1 of S (CaS04.2H20). The highest concentration of B in alfalfa was observed when 50 mg kg-1of K2SO4 was applied. In white clover, the highest contents of B, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn were documented when 50 mg kg-1of K2SO4was used. The content and ratio of micronutrients varied according to the cutting number of both legumes.
