Abstract

An experiment was conducted with the objective of studying the effect of stocking density on the performance of laying quails. The experiment lasted five months and 540 quails were used, starting from 35 days of age, in a completely randomized design with five treatments (21, 24. 27, 30 e 33 quails/cage or 173.7; 152.0; 135.1; 121.6 and 110.6 cm2 birds) and four replicates. The data were subjected to analysis of variance, with treatment effects being decomposed through orthogonal polynomials. The results showed that stocking density increased ration intake linearly (P<0.01), decreased daily egg produetion/bird and daily egg weight/bird linearly (P<0.01), and worsened feed conversion into egg weight and egg production linearly (P<0.01). No treatment effects on average egg weight or egg breakage were found. A simulation study showed that, under the conditions prevailing in this study, net return/quail house/dav was best at 30 birds/cage, where as net return/bird/day was best at 21 birds/cage.
