Resistence of Hoistein and Mantiqueira young bulls to artificial infestation of ticks (Boophilus microplus Canestrini)
Keywords:
cattle resistance, boophilus microplus, mantiqueira cattle, tick infestationAbstract
168 Holstein and Mantiqueira young bulls 1 to 2 years old, maintained in feed lot regime, received two artificial infestations, fourteen days apart, with 20,000 larval (1 gr eggs), in two years and in the middle of each season. Semi-engorged female ticks 4.5 to 8.0 mm long, were counted in the whole animal body from the 18th to the 23ethday of infestation. The data were transformed to log (count + 1) and analysed to years, season, breed and age effects. The average of the first and second infestations were 683.14 and 1338.26 ticks with 73.4% of correlation. Years and seasons of infestation, year-season interaction and breed groups were significant (P <0.01). Mantiqueira animals were more resistant (636.17 ticks) than Holsteins (967. 19 ticks). Ticks infestation was lowest in summer season and highest m the spring. The correlation between counts of the 21eth day of infestation (X) and the total infestation (180th to 23eth day) (Ŷ) was 93.91%. The regression equation Ŷ = 0.718103 + 3.503107X represents this relation.Downloads
