Abstract

Data from 2,297 lactations related to 446 Jersey cows, which were sired by 42 bulls and recorded during 20 years, were analyzed in order to study the effect of some environmental sources of variation (calving year, calving season and calving order) on some productive and reproductive traits. This herd was located in Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo State. Stastistical analysis, utilizing least squares method, included the following effects: calving order, calving year anti calving season. Milk production, lactation length and calving interval, expressed as general means values ±standard errors, were, respectively, 2,798 ± 724kg, 314 ± 61 days and 413 ± 73 days. The calving order was significant (P <0.01) only on milk production. Season effect showed significance (P <0.05) on milk production and (P <0.01) on lactation length and calving interval, The higher milk production and lactation length means were observed during the rainy season and the best calving interval means happened on the dry season. The year of calving had significant effect (P< 0.0 1) over all traits analyzed.
