Abstract

Thirty two male and female nubian goats, nine months old and 21,2 kg initial liveweight were fed coast cross (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers) hay harvested with 45 or 60 days of growth and given as long chopped (3.0 cm) or short chopped (0,65 cm). plus concentrate( 1% liveweight) during 90 days, on a complete randomized design on a 2x2x2 factorial experiment. It was allowed a refusal of 20 % of the hay given. The rcfusals had a lower nutritive value for lhe 60 day hay and for the long chopped hay. The hay eaten had a greater nutritive value when harvested at 45 days of growth and for lhe long chopped. The dry matter intake was greater (P< 0.01) for lhe animals fed 45 than 60 days hay (74.06 x 67.83 g/kg0.75), long than short chopped hay (73,51 x68.36 gMS/kg0.75) and for males than females(72.6 and 69.30 gMS/kg0.75). The daily liveweight gain was greater (P< 0.01) for lhe animals fed 45 than 60 days hay (93.49 and 76.52 g) and for Lhe male than femalegoats ( 90.76 and 79.26 g). Only the animals fed 60 day hay showed greater (P< 0.05) daily liveweight gains when fcd long chopped hay (81.99 and 71.06 g.) The plasma glucose and urea levals showed no differences (P> 0.05) before feeding. After feeding the increase on the time of hay harvesting led to a decrease (P< 0.01) in glucose values only for the animals fed short chopped hay. The glucose values were lower (P< 0.01) for the animals fed short chopped hay only for the hay harvested at 60 days. Plasma urea levels showed no differences (P> 0.05) after feeding.
