Abstract

This work was conducted at Posto Experimental de Castilho, SP, from 1982 to 1986 and their objectives were to give information about efficiency of reproduction in Mediterraneum and Jafarabadi water buffaloes, raised in pastures of green panic (Panicum maximum, Jacq) for beef production en the northwest region of São Paulo State. Females Mediterraneum and Jafarabadi showed 84.0 and 73.1% (P ‰¤ 0.01) of fertility rate, respectively, with calving intervals of 363.1 ± 2,5 and 369 ± 3,6 days (P ‰¤ 0.05). Average body weight at first service and first calving were respectively 533.0 ± 10.8 and 639.0 ± 81; 547.0 ± 12.3 and 615.0 ± 12.7 kg for Mediterraneum and Jafarabadi breeds, and in the same order, the ages at first calving were 1,169.0 ± 34.1 and 1,094.0 ± 55.5 days. Calvings occured at the first semester of the year, being 85% on February, March and April. Mortality rates until weaning were 7.7 and 6.6%, respectively, for these same breeds. These results demonstrated that, in favorable conditions, water buffaloes reach good performance and higt development potential.
