Abstract

This experiment was carried out at Seção de Agronomia de Plantas Forrageiras, Estação Experimental do Instituto de Zootecnia, Nova Odessa - SP, Brazil, from February 1982 to June 1984. The purpose was to evaluate the dry matter production (DM) and the proteic value of six Panicum maximum cultivars (Colonião Vermelho - NO 674, IPEACS - NO 679, Aruana - NO 753, Hamil -NO l68 and SEA-12 - €¢ NO 1982). They were selected in the introduction garden and were compared with the commercial cultivar, IZ-1. The local soil is a Red-YeIlow Podzolic SoiI Laras variation and it was used three fertilization levels (N1 :60 P205 + 25 N and no lime; N2 :240 P2O5 + 25 N + limeand N3 :240 P2O5 + 50N +lime, in kg/ha/yr.) with potassium replacement correspondent to 4% in KCI of the total dry matter production removed per cut. It was verified that Colonião Vermelho and IZ-1 had less drought resistance during periods of low humidity. The dry matter production was exposed to a decline from the 1st to the 2nd year and from the €œrainy season€ to €œdry season€ for all cultivars and fertilization levels. The cultivars Aruana and IPEACS showed anual distribuition of D.M. The highest means of crude protein yield were presented by the cultivars: IZ -1, Colonião Vermelho and SEA-12.
