Abstract

This work was conducted at Posto Experimental de Castilho, SP, from 1982 to 1986 and their objectives were to appraise the birth weight and performance in mediterraneun and jafarabadi water bufaloes, raised in pastures of green panic (Panicum maximum, Jacq) for beef production in the northwest region of São Paulo State. The mean weight for females and males were respectively: birth 37.91 and 38.76 kg; 4 months: 148.88 and 155.37 kg; 7 months: 215.99 and 231.76 kg (P<0.01); 12 months: 297.00 and 314.57 kg (P<0.01); 18 months: 327.47 and 385.47 kg (P <0.01); 24 months: 508.82 and 520.14 kg. The mean weight for mediterraneun and jafarabadi breeds were respectively: birth 38.86 and 37.81 kg; 4 months: 151.05 and 153.20 kg; 7 months: 224.63 and 223.12 kg, 12 months: 301.31 and 310.26 kg; 18 months: 516.15 and 512.82 kg. There was an increase of the lodyweight during the years and a significant difference among the progenies of sires within each breed. Cows weight at the end mating season did not affect the birth weight and the weight at 24 months (P >0.05), howere it had a highby significant effect at 4, 7 and 12 months (P < 0.01) and 18 months (P >0.05). These results demonstrated that, in favorable conditions, water buffaloes reach good performance.
