Effects of liming and micronutrient additon on forage legumes. I. Perennial soybean and siratro grown in pots

Abstract

This experiment was carried out in a greenhouse of the Instituto de Zootecnia, at Nova Odessa, SP, Brazil. Plants of perennial soybean (Glycine wightii Verdc. cv. Tinaroo) and siratro (Macroptilium atropurpureum DC. cv. Siratro) were grown in a Red Yellow Podzolic Soil Laras variation. Four levels of dolomitic limestone (0; 0.83; 1.66 and 2.49 tons per hectare) were applied. Each limestone level was split into four treatments consisting of a combination of Mo and B plus Cu plus Zn, arranged in a factorial design. Three replicates were used. It was found that dry matter yield, nodulation and total amount of nitrogen of perennial soybean increased with lime rates. Maximum values were to be expected with levels higher than the maximum used in this experiment. Symptoms of Mn toxicity were observed in perennial soybean in the absence of lime. In the case of siratro the highest amount of nitrogen was observed to occur when 1 ton of limestone per hectare was used. With this amount of lime pH was 5.18 exchangeable Al 0.35 meq/l00ml, aluminum saturation = 24.8% and V = 27.2%. Among the micronutrients, molibdenum caused the greatest response. Joint application of B, Cu and Zn showed favourable effect for siratro in the presence of the highest level of limestone. Liming brought about significant changes in the mineral composition of the forages, whereas the joint application of B, Cu and Zn caused an increase in B concentration in the legumes irrespective of the level of limestone.
