Sex effect over individual weight from 21 and 56 days of age in Duroc swine

Abstract

Sex ratio, litter size and individual weights, in Puroc breed, were ,measured, from 531 litters (3092 piglets) at 21 and 526 litters (2944 piglets) at 56 days age (weaning), during the period of 1957 lo 1970, in the Estação Experimental do Instituto de Zootecnia Sertãozinho €” São Paulo. Male percentage, litter size, and average male weight at 21 days of age were respectively: 50.2, 5.82 and 4.4kg. At 56 days of age the same parameters were: 49.8, 5.59 and 11.13kg. Females weighted 4.35 and 11.10kg at 21 and 36 days. Male and female weights from the same litter differed significantly (P < 0.05) of 0.18 and 0.30kg respectively at 21 and 56 days of age in favour of the males.
