Abstract

It was made statistical analysis in 161 and 240 ages ai firstcalvingofheifersfrom 17 Gir and 20 Guzerá sires, respectively, reared on pastures of Panicuin maxirnum Jacq., Hypharrenia rufa Nees and Digitaria decumbens Stent. at Estação Experimental de Zootecnia de Sertozinho, SP. These heifers were submitted at controlled from October to February with natural mating and artificial insemination after they Fad get in average 24 months of age or 300kg of body weight. For Gir breed the calvings occurred from July to December in a period of 1961 to 1974 and similar to Guzerá breed, but including also 1975. For both breeds the selected statistical model included the randon effect of sire and the fixed effects of month and year of calving, sex 01 the calf and this double interation. The apropriated model showed significant effect for sire (P < 0.05) and year of calving (P < 0.01). The effect of month of calving was significant only for Guzerá breed (P< 0.05). Means, standards deviation, coeficients of variation and coeficients of heritability for age at first calving. based on paternal half sister corrrelations, including randon effect of sires and adjusted for the significant fixed effects were 1250.39 and 1200.07 days; 188.5.3 and 140.79 days; 15.08 and 11.64%; 0.150 ± 0.239 and 0.154 ±0.175 for Gir and Guzerá, respectively. lt was verified that the components 01 environmental factors were the principal sources of variation on age at first calving in these zebu breeds.
