Abstract

A trial of digestibility, at Department of Animal Science, on Federal University of Viçosa (DZO/UFV), was performed testing commercial earthworm meal, with following composition: 77.1% dry matter (DM); 45.2% crude protein (CP); 2.2% ether extract (EE); 12.2% neutral detergent fiber (NDF); 9.8% acid detergent fiber (ADF); 19.3% ashes; 0.7% calcium (Ca); 0.4% phosphorus (P) and 2960 kcal/kg gross energy (GE), and soybean meal with 87.9% DM; 49.9% CP; 0.8% EE; 21.1% NDF; 3.4% ADF; 7.8% ashes; 0.34% Ca; 0.67 P e 4735 kcal/kg GE. The digestibility coefficient of DM (DCDM), digestibility coefficient of CP (DCCP) and digestibility coefficient of GE (DCGE), metabolization coefficient of CP (MCCP), and digestible DM (DDM), digestible protein (DP), digestible energy (DE) and metabolizable protein (MP) of the earthworm meal were the followed: 72.38% (DCDM); 92.34% (DCCP); 79.87% (DCGE); 80.21% (MCCP); 61.59% (DDM); 48.44% (DP); 3066 kcal/kg (DE) and 42.09% (MP), while the soybean meal coefficients were: 83.45% (DCDM); 88.65% (DCCP); 83.14% (DCGE); 77.60% (MCCP); 74.03% (DDM); 44.47% (DP); 4093 kcal/kg (DE) and 38.94% (MP). The earthworm meal is a high quality protein source of animal origin, well consumed by pigs, and its digestibility is similar to soybean meal.
